Food AWARE supported the local Barnsley 'Chernobyl Children' project
29th July 2010
Food AWARE supported the local Barnsley 'Chernobyl Children' project by donating lots of surplus food to help feed the 12 children from Belarus and the host families who kindly look after them during their month's stay in the UK. This is the second year we have supported this fantastic project and are delighted to have supported them this year in partnership with Factory Foods in Rotherham, South Yorkshire.
Food AWARE supplied bread, bread rolls, sausage rolls, sandwiches, fruit, cakes, tomatoes, cucumber etc and Factory Foods kindly donated some biscuits, soft drinks, water, chocolate etc which made a huge difference to those involved with the project!
Recuperative Holidays
Doctors in Belarus say that this boosts the children’s immune systems for at least two years, helping them to resist, or recover from, serious illness.
In the summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it is important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. It can also significantly reduce the amount of radioactive caesium which has built up in a child’s body.
Each summer Chernobyl Children’s Project (UK) brings around 300 children to Britain for a recuperative holiday. It also organises holidays in clean parts of Belarus for children whose disabilities make it difficult for them to travel.
